How Can She Slap, Sir?

with 13 comments

Apparently, there is this reality show called Dadagiri (TV’s meanest game show) on a channel called Bindaas. I’d never heard of either, till this happened (Via: Great Bong):

Part 1 – Prelude (01:03):

Part 2 – Real Action (02:18):

After being covered on TMZ, the video is a global hit and copies are available on virtually every video-sharing website.

Here is a short summary, if you can’t watch the videos for some reason:

The show pitches college students (contestants) against college bullies (hosts). Every round has different flavours of bullying (all intent on humiliation of contestants, basically). One of the hosts “Isha – The Goddess” – plays the role of the college rich bitch, who is supposed to insult contestants for their ugliness and for their lack of class.

She was doing her usual ‘your-sideburns-are-from-60s’ routine (Part 1, above) while the contestants managed to remain cool and didn’t respond to her comments. Infuriated (scripted, I think) she asked them whether they have tongues in the mouths (direct translation from the Hindi quip – ‘munh mein zabaan nahi hai kya‘). One of the two contestants said that they are quiet because they don’t want to talk to her. She barked at him to “fuck off”. The contestant managed a (weak) comeback of “you go”. Something cracked inside the hostess, and she slapped the contestant. Shocked, the contestant slapped her back (Part 2, above).

The other host then jumped into the fray to defend the hostess and started beating up the contestant who kept asking “how can she slap, sir?” Thereafter, the whole crew seemed to descend on the poor contestant and proceeded to beat him to a pulp. In the process, apart from getting physically thrashed, he gets thoroughly abused verbally as well. Expletives were all over the place, in Hindi and in English.

Now, quite obviously, the first slap wasn’t part of the script. That explains the reflexive return slap by the contestant. Moreover, he kept asking the host about the slap that he received. He has confirmed as much now (and is suing the channel):

“This incident occurred four months ago. The participants of the show had to pass through the litmus test of abuses and spats. And it was all scripted! We were all given our parts where 70 per cent was to be said as is and 30 per cent would be improvisations,” says Ravi. “There was this girl called Isha opposite me who was supposed to abuse me and I was to retaliate, but calmly. After a while when it came to improvisations, I presume she was out of words and came and slapped me hard. I was shocked and in the heat of the moment, I slapped her back. That led to the entire unit of about 70 people jumping on me beating me black and blue. It was a miracle in itself that I managed to escape from there,” he says. [TOI]

Legal tangles apart, I am on the contestant’s side on this one. She shouldn’t have slapped him in the first place. The rest of the crew had no right whatsoever to beat him to a pulp (he was thrown on the ground and kicked, and was reduced to tears). And the verbal abuse is just shameful, especially coming from a TV crew who are supposed to know better than to scream obscenities when the camera is rolling. Disgusting. Funny too, in a sad sort of way.

The channel, no doubt, is pretty happy with this turn of events. In fact, it probably deliberately leaked the clip to create controversy and raise TRPs.

PS: The incident has also become an internet meme. There is even a dedicated website, which sells “how can you slap” t-shirts.

  1. thats was not fare, i feel bad for the poor contestant. by the way, the girl (show hostess) sounds like a slumdog bitch to me.

The guy who slapped her back is a hero, and he is right how can she slap him, she cant. so he did the right thing.

he should sue the tv station and that hostess for being abused on national television (i dont think he signed for any slaps in the contract)

in the end, i strongly believe that the majority of viewers will support the contestant.

I support you man.,.. Big time

  4. Um, don’t know if you guys read this, but it’s a Reality show where students willingly get abused for money. The producers say the man was briefed that Isha might slap him, and given that she has probably never done manual labor in her life, wouldn’t be too hard. Him slapping her was an act of stupidity, since they all probably have her back, the best thing to do would have at least been to push her back and say “What the hell, I wasn’t told about this.” Since he had to prove he was a man and slap a woman, no matter how much of a bitch she might be, he got a well deserved curb stomping because he couldn’t control himself. I think they should drop it, since she DOES have a right to say those things on TV, because its part of the script, and thus, her job.

  8. Honestly speaking.. scripted or not.. its a disgusting TV Show with poor choice of language and poor scripts, the fact that she hit a contestant he has acted in self defense but ended up getting the shit kicked out of him, he has every right to sue. If this was in any other country, 1. Women would not speak like that on national TV. 2. No host would ever HIT a contestant. 3. If this was on the streets and it was the guy host that slapped the contestant the guy host would be smashed. Honestly she is a bitch, and she deserved it, saying words is one thing, but using physical force is another, this show is disgusting and a disgrace for all Indians (I am Indian and live in Australia). This is why the world looks down on Indians. because of the shit like this, Honestly she looks and acts like a fucken whore. I wouldnt be surprise if she gets the shit kicked out of her. Shame on you Indian Television for showing junk like this.

  9. Yes Victor Anada Metraya. Because how two people behaved on a reality tv shows aimed at youngsters, totally determines India’s foreign policy. God I wish I was as smart as you, NOT!

  11. Another classic case of double standards. Violence against women is considered wrong in 100% of circumstances, but if a woman physically assaults a man then it is considered socially acceptable.

We’re constantly reminded that men do not have the right to hit women. We’re never constantly reminded that women do not have the right to hit men. A man hits a woman and the cops get called (which is as it should be). But when a woman hits a man, no one thinks the woman has done the wrong thing and everyone watching expects the man to not retaliate.

If a male host slapped a female contestant and she bitch-slapped him back, she’d be hailed as a hero on YouTube and she would be getting TV interviews and product endorsements. Plus the male host would have to go into hiding like Salman Rushdie because there would be a “death fatwa” on his head and everyone would to kill the guy for hitting a woman. It’s interesting how the exact opposite occurred when a female host slaps a male contestant: the victim gets beaten to a pulp by an angry mob because he was assaulted and dared to return the favour.

    So much for equal rights.

The mistake the poor male contestant made was pleading with the angry mob “How can she slap, sir?” and expecting sympathy + understanding. Those people were the friends and colleages of the female host and all they cared about was their (female) friend. It wouldn’t matter if she had murdered the guy’s family, that angry mob would still back her 100% because that’s what people do: they protect their own at all costs and don’t care a damn about any kind of fairness. The place became a total war zone and needed to be treated as such.

After the retaliatory slap, the male contestant should gone into “war mode” like a US Marine and immediately made a bee line for the exit. Anyone get in your way? Give ’em a black eye on the way through and don’t stop moving. If you see something you can pick up and use as a weapon, do it… just make sure it’s light and you can still move fast while carrying it. Keep going for the exit like your life depends upon it, because funnily enough it does! Don’t have time to fight 30 people. Get out of there, fast and strong and you mightactually escaped the situation with no broken ribs and your pride in tact.

Cautionary tale guys. If you’re on the wrong side of mob violence, GTFO pronto. You don’t want your survival to depend upon the angry mob running out of gas before they kill you or cause you permanent damage…
